Chevy Colorado
An efficient, off-road truck with a robust power train and reinforced underbody protection? Yes, that's the Chevy Colorado. The turbocharged 2.7L inline-four-cylinder engine mates to an eight-speed automatic transmission for an EPA-estimated 19/23 MPG city/highway. And although every Colorado trim has the same engine, they're not all created equal. The WT and LT have 237 horsepower and 259 lb.-ft. of torque, the Z71 and Trail Boss have 310 horsepower and 390 lb.-ft. of torque, and the top ZR2 delivers 310 horsepower and 430 lb.-ft. of torque. Max towing is 7,700 lbs., and available off-road features include 35-inch tires, a factory-installed lift, a wider chassis, and 5 Baron Steel skid plates for best-in-class underbody protection.
Toyota Tacoma
The Toyota Tacoma offers two engines for its customers. The standard four-cylinder engine tallies 159 horsepower and 180 lb.-ft. of torque. But the stronger 3.5L V6 engine gives this model a kick in the pants with 278 horsepower and 265 lb.-ft. of torque. Off-roading is best left to the Tacoma TRD Pro. It includes factory-lifted suspension, huge shock absorbers, and available 18-inch wheels. If customers option the four-wheel drive with their V6 engine combination, the Toyota Tacoma will pull up to 6,800 lbs. and carry up to 1,685 lbs. in the flatbed.
Ford Ranger
The 2023 Ford Ranger's standard 2.3L EcoBoost is consistent throughout the trim. It will offer up to 270 horsepower and 310 lb.-ft. of torque. Customers looking for more off-road prowess will appreciate the Ford Ranger XLT. They'll have 8.9 inches of ground clearance and a Terrain Management System that will fine-tune their commute across rocky terrain. The max towing capacity tops out at 7,500 lb. with best-in-class payload of 1,905 lbs.
